OneDrive Overview
Microsoft
OneDrive is a cloud storage tool. OneDrive just like you would Dropbox/Google
Drive/Box and like a USB drive. You can toss stuff in there and have it sync to
the cloud, and thus have it available to you via smartphone, computer, tablet,
etc. You can share individual files or folders with anyone or any group of
people. OneDrive is used to store documents, PDFs, media files that need to be
available. Visualize OneDrive as a filing cabinet that organizes all of
your handy files, plus use it as a place to archive important documents that
one day might need to be pulled up (like permits, applications, receipts).
Sharepoint Overview
Microsoft
Sharepoint is a multi-featured tool and this is the one that causes the most
confusion, because we will only be using one of its many features. A LONG time
ago, Microsoft created Sharpeoint as a team collaboration tool. It was designed
as an internal team or project website where people could visit to get the
latest news, share links/resources, share files, etc. The one part of
Sharepoint that we will use right now is the "shared documents"
feature. Here's the confusing part: this componen/feature of Sharepoint looks
and behaves exactly like OneDrive. A couple of years ago, Microsoft
(behind the scenes) converted the "shared documents" feature of
Sharepoint into OneDrive. So, just remember that while they look and behave the
same, OneDrive is YOUR personal storage tool while Sharepoint is basically the
TEAM's OneDrive storage tool.
